If there is one question we get asked almost daily at Vic Falls Nature Delight, it is this:
“What is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?”
The honest answer?
There is no single best time. The best time to visit Victoria Falls depends entirely on what kind of experience you want.
Do you want to feel the thunder of the mighty waterfall shaking the ground beneath your feet? Are you chasing incredible safari sightings? Looking for adrenaline and adventure? Travelling on a budget? Planning a honeymoon or family trip?
After years of helping travelers experience Victoria Falls, one thing has become very clear to us:
The best time to visit Victoria Falls is different for everyone, but the experience is unforgettable all year round.
This guide is based on our real local experience, not recycled travel advice. We live here, guide here, and
help travelers every day navigate expectations, seasons, safari timing, and activities. Let’s help you decide what is best for your Victoria Falls adventure.

Why Choosing the Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls Is Not So Simple
Many travel blogs oversimplify the answer.
They will tell you:
“April to June is the best time.”
Or:
“July to October is best.”
But here is the truth most people do not explain properly:
It is very difficult to get both:
- A roaring, full-flowing waterfall and
- Exceptional big game viewing
at exactly the same time. Nature likes balance. When the waterfall is at its most powerful, the bush tends to be greener, thicker, and full of water sources. Wildlife spreads out, making game viewing less predictable. When safari viewing is at its peak, vegetation is sparse and animals gather around limited water sources, but the waterfall may not be at its fullest. This is key in answering when to visit Victoria falls?
That tradeoff matters.
At Vic Falls Nature Delight, we usually recommend late June through July for travelers wanting the best of
both worlds. You still experience a spectacular waterfall while improving your chances of excellent wildlife sightings in
nearby safari destinations.
Victoria Falls by Season: What It Is Really Like
January to March: Quiet, Affordable & Underrated
This is one of our favourite periods for travelers looking for value. Tourism tends to be quieter, which means:
- Fewer crowds
- Better accommodation deals
- Greater flexibility with pricing
- Easier activity availability
Curio sellers, activity providers, and travel agents are often more flexible during this season. For budget-conscious travelers, this period can be excellent. You still experience the excitement of one of Africa’s greatest travel destinations, but without premiumseason prices. If our own family were visiting for affordability and flexibility, this is genuinely when we would recommend coming.
And here is something important many people misunderstand:
The Falls are still beautiful.
Trust us, we see them all year round. Water levels matter less than people think, especially for first-time visitors. The sheer scale and beauty of Victoria Falls still leaves most people speechless.
April to June: The Mighty Zambezi at Full Power | Victoria Falls High Water Season
If your dream is to witness Victoria Falls at its loudest, wildest, and most dramatic, this period is extraordinary.
This is peak waterfall season. The experience becomes almost theatrical. You can hear the roar of the falls from over 5 kilometres away.
The mist rises into the sky from astonishing distances, sometimes visible from 15 kilometres away, and you may begin to feel spray long before reaching the rainforest. Walking through the rainforest during high water feels magical.
You are not simply looking at the waterfall. You are experiencing it.
The sound surrounds you. The spray cools the air. Rainbows appear unexpectedly through rising mist. And if you choose a helicopter flight over the falls during this period, expect something unforgettable. Watching sunlight hit millions of rising droplets while rainbows form beneath you feels almost surreal during Victoria Falls high water season
The tradeoff?
- Safari visibility can become more challenging.
- The bush is greener, waterholes are still full, and wildlife spreads deeper into national parks.
- Some game drive routes may even become difficult to navigate depending on rainfall.
July to October: Safari Season & Balanced Experiences | Best Month to Visit Victoria Falls
If wildlife is high on your bucket list, this is arguably the strongest season and best month to visit Victoria Falls. The dry season transforms safari experiences. Vegetation becomes sparse, visibility improves, and animals move closer to rivers and permanent water sources.
This is especially rewarding for:
- Safari lovers
- Families
- Honeymooners
- First-time African travelers
During these months, safari destinations near Victoria Falls become incredibly productive. Many travelers combine Victoria Falls with:
- Chobe National Park in Botswana
- Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe
- Livingstone experiences in Zambia
One of the biggest advantages?
You still get wonderful views of Victoria Falls while dramatically improving wildlife viewing opportunities.
At Vic Falls Nature Delight, this is often our recommendation for guests wanting both waterfall experiences
and safari adventure as the best month to visit Victoria Falls.
November to December: Local Energy & Pleasant Surprises
As tourism slows down toward the end of the year, Victoria Falls begins to feel more local again.
This period is excellent if you enjoy:
- Meeting local travelers
- Quieter attractions
- More flexibility in planning
And safari still surprises people.
A Short Story From a Chobe Day Trip During This Season
After several days in Victoria Falls without seeing elephants, disappointment had begun to creep in. Our guide, Jinx, worked hard throughout the day in Botswana on the Chobe Day Trip. The group saw buffalo, impala, giraffe, and even two male lions. Still, one thing was missing:
Elephants.
And for many travelers, elephants are the dream. As we drove back through the Zambezi National Park, rain began falling.
Then suddenly, there they were. Massive elephants standing in the middle of the road, drinking rainwater collected in shallow pools. One even mock charged the vehicle. The atmosphere inside the vehicle shifted instantly. The disappointment disappeared.
The excitement was unforgettable.
Vic Falls Nature Delight
That is safari.
Unexpected. Wild. Emotional.
And sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them.
Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls by Traveler Type
Adventure Seekers
Victoria Falls is an adventure playground almost all year round.
Activities like:
- Bungee jumping
- Gorge Swing
- Ziplining
- Sunset Cruises
- Lion Walks
- Elephant Interaction
However:
White-water rafting, kayaking, and jet boating depend heavily on water levels. High water season, usually between March and May or June, can make these activities unsafe.
Wildlife & Safari Lovers
Best months: July to October
Wildlife becomes easier to spot as animals gather near water sources and vegetation thins.
This is prime safari season.
Budget Travelers
Best months: January to March
Accommodation prices often drop, crowds are smaller, and better deals become available.
You can experience Victoria Falls without overstretching your budget.
Travelers Wanting the Best of Both Worlds
Best month to visit Victora Falls: Late June to July
You still enjoy magnificent waterfall views while improving safari opportunities. This is often our sweet spot recommendation
One Mistake Most Travelers Make on When to Visit Victoria Falls
If there is one thing we wish more people knew before coming to Victoria Falls, it is this:
Stay longer.
Most travelers book 2 to 3 nights. And yes, you can see quite a bit.
But in our honest opinion:
5 days or more transforms the experience completely.
Why?
Because Victoria Falls is more than just the waterfall.
You can combine:
Zambia
- Rhino tracking
- Mosi game drives
- Unique wildlife encounters
Botswana
- Chobe river safaris
- Incredible game drives
- Hippo sightings on islands during the day
Zimbabwe
- Hwange safaris
- Scenic experiences
- Cultural immersion
Five days allows you to experience three countries, travel comfortably, rest properly, and avoid rushing. Yes, some roads can be rough. But experiences like Hwange are still absolutely worth it!

Sometimes even spotting a warthog becomes magical for someone seeing one for the first time.
Handy Tips:
